PINETOPS, N.C. (WNCT) – Eight people had to be plucked off of their rooftops by the Coast Guard Sunday in Pinetops.

Edgecombe Fire Department personnel reported around 9 a.m. that eight people were stranded on top of roofs in Pinetops due to high water and needed evacuation.

A MH-60 Jayhawk air crew from Air Station Elizabeth City launched and arrived in Pinetops, where the air crew rescued the eight people and took them to Pitt-Greenville Airport. The air crew is currently still on scene to further assess damage and assist any evacuations.

“We were glad to assist our partners from Edgecombe Fire Department in this rescue effort,” said Lt. Cmdr. Scott Koser, Assistant operations officer at Air Station Elizabeth City. “Our crews are standing by to assist our emergency response partners with future requests.”
