Storm surge leaves many Atlantic Beach residents unfazed

ATLANTIC BEACH (WNCT) – While winds buffeted Atlantic Beach and waves crashed down on the beach, many families still went out to take selfies and play on the windy beach.

One Havelock family said they’d never seen a hurricane before and wanted an adventure taking on the surf.

“It’s cold, but it’s awesome at the same time, like it’s not cold once you get in,” said one of the family members who got in the water. (It’s) very sticky cause of the salt and all of that.”

Many locals said they aren’t leaving and didn’t even board up their homes.

For residents who need to get to a shelter, there is a shelter at Newport Middle School.
