Pamlico County residents hope for break in flooding

ORIENTAL, N.C. (WNCT) – Even before Hurricane Matthew’s arrival, parts of Pamlico County have already flooded, and more rain is the last thing residents want.

“We had enough of Irene, and we’ve had enough rain this year,” said Larry Harper, who lives in Oriental. “We don’t really need it to rain.”

Harper has losses at the fish market in Oriental.

“I marked the wall at the high-tide marking,” Harper said. “We lost all our freezers and anything left in here.”

Pamlico County resident Marty Varner lives in the lowland, and he had water in his home.

“(It was) nine inches in the house,” said Varner. “You better have flood insurance because it’s going to flood,” said Varner. “You don’t call it lowland because it’s not low.”

The effects of hurricane Matthew have yet to reach the Pamlico area and there are already high-water signs and washed out roads

So more rain from whatever Matthew brings would only make the situation worse.

While these folks aren’t worried, they just hope the forecast holds true and Matthew stays away because the last thing they want is another Irene.
