Onslow County clears brush, trees to improve drainage ahead of Matthew

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – In Onslow County, public services crews are busy prepping roads and open land.

They cleared land of trees and other brush that would prevent it from draining easily.

“We’ve experienced some heavy rainfalls in a short time, like last week,” said Johnny Stiltner, Jacksonville Streets Maintenance superintendent. “The drainage system is not capable of handling a rainfall like that in a short period of time. We want to make sure we can do everything we can do in advance.”

Crews also dropped off sandbags at local businesses in downtown Jacksonville.
