How senior citizens can stay safe during Hurricane Matthew

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Senior citizens can be at risk during a hurricane due to a lack of resources.

If you know someone in need, here are some things to cross off the list to ensure their health and safety:.

  • Make sure their prescriptions are refilled and up to date.
  • Label any equipment like wheelchairs or walkers with their name number and address.
  •  Keep fresh batteries in disaster kits.
  • Have already prepared food that is easily accessible.

“Be their guardian angel,” said Rick Zeck of Pitt County Council Aging. “Watch over them make sure that they are safe, cause they may not hear or see things that are coming and be aware of that.”

Zeck also said it’s important to always stay calm and reach out to emergency services if needed.
