ECU police investigating claims that a student open carried a gun on campus

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – ECU police are investigating reports of a student seen on campus holstering a gun.

According to reports, around 5:30 p.m. Thursday the ECU Police Department was notified about reports on social media saying a male was seen on campus with a holstered gun. A witness reportedly said it happened around 1:00 p.m. in a 3rd-floor hallway of the Bate Building.

The male did not threaten anyone with the handgun but was carrying it in a holstered position. According to a witness, it was seen when the male showed the weapon to another male.

The male is described as a white male, with reddish hair, a beard, wearing a black rain jacket, and a beige ball cap.

A criminal investigation has been initiated by the ECU Police Department. Anyone with information is asked to contact the ECU Police Department at 252-328-6787. ECU students, staff, and faculty are asked to report suspicious or criminal activity as soon as possible.
