GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Many people are looking forward to splurging this Halloween season.
But how much they’re willing to spend may surprise you.
Local Halloween stores are getting a head start on the holiday festivities.
Store retailers said they have people waiting at the door when they open.
According to the National Retail Federation, Americans are expected to spend 8.4 billion dollars for the spooky day.
Last year consumers spent around 75 dollars a person.
This year they’ll spend about 83 dollars a person.
Halloween Express owner, Lisa Cartwright, said decorations usually sell early in the season, then costumes fly off the shelves.
She said pop culture has a lot of influence on their most popular costumes.
A top seller so far is the Harley Quinn outfits.
Cartwright said people are out spending more money because more are in the holiday spirit, “I think people are looking for something fun and something good to do and especially in Greenville, we are like the city to celebrate Halloween so you know I think get out there and have a good time with it.”
According to the NRF more money will be spent on Halloween candy then costumes
Cartwright said she has witnessed people spending hundreds of dollars on just one visit while others come in and only spend 20 bucks.
