Officials: Measles eliminated in the Americas

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – The World Health Organization announced the Americas have eliminated the measles disease.

The viral disease was to blame for more than 101,000 deaths in the Americas between 1971 and 1979. Health officials credit mass vaccinations, which started in 1980, for eliminating it.

A disease is declared “eliminated” when there has been no transmission in a specific region for a year or more.
