Update: Former fire chief dies after colliding with tractor-trailer in Lenoir County

KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) – The North Carolina Highway Patrol says a Lenoir County man is dead after a running into a 18-wheeler with his car.

It happened around 7:15 on Thursday morning in Jones County.

Troopers say 64-year-old Gilbert Tilghman was driving east on U.S. 70 when he ran into the back of an 18-wheeler near Roy White Road.   Troopers say Tilghman, of Kinston, died from injuries sustained in the collision.

According to the Dover Volunteer Fire Department, Tilghman was a former the chief of the department. He retired in 2010.

Troopers say mo other people were injured during the accident.
