A man who said he was searching for his stolen cell phone and wallet in a dumpster is being treated for injuries at Vidant Medical Center after a dump truck picked up and emptied the dumpster while he was still inside, Jacksonville police officers said.

Officers said the truck picked up the dumpster from the Piney Green Shopping Center. The driver made a few more pickups and the compacter activated twice before the driver heard sounds from the hopper and helped the man out at the Circle K off Highway 24, according to officials.

Emergency services were called, and the man was taken to Onslow Memorial Hospital before being transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville where he is being evaluated.

This is the first time a person has been in a dumpster emptied into a city of Jacksonville dump truck, according to a news release.
