Kinston working to clean up drainage pipes around town

KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) – The City of Kinston is taking steps to help prevent flooding in the area.

Kinston Public Services is working diligently to clean drainage pipes around town.

Street superintendent Gilbert Acevedo said large amounts of debris are being carried through storm drains by water. That clogs the pipes and sewers, so when more rain falls, the build-up causes street flooding.

Acevedo has advice on how property owners can help them prevent this from happening.

“If you’re putting your leaves beside the road, just be sure to keep them off the street so we can come around and get them up from the yard without them infiltrating our drainage system,” said Gilbert Acevedo, Kinston Public Works.

Acevedo said the build-up can also cause high levels of nitrogen to infiltrate your water source.
