GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Workers are putting on the finishing touches for the 97th Annual Pitt County American Legion Agricultural Fair which kicks off Tuesday evening.

It costs $6 to get in and proceeds go to support future fairs, Pitt Community College, and other charities in the community.

Fair Executive Phyllis Ross said they expect more than 50,000 to come out this year and that’s good news for the area.

“It really has great economic impact because we have to furnish hotels with some of our entertainers. Then people coming in, we have had people come all the way from Virginia. So it really does help with that and it just brings the people in and they spend money,” Ross said.

Fair-goers will see lots of deputies patrolling the fairgrounds. Monday, inspectors went through to check all the rides to make sure they’re safe. They’ll also be doing spot checks throughout the week.

Ross said safety is the number one priority.

“The health department comes out and inspects all the food booths. We have three food booths that are operating here on the fairground. Plus there are some renters that rent spaces that have their wagons and so forth so they come out and they inspect them,” Ross said.

Health inspectors will do a thorough check Tuesday night and surprise checks later this week. To see how each food stand does on its inspections, the owners are required to post a copy of the report in a place where customers can see it.
