New Bern athletic field to be named in honor of Office Alexander Thalmann

Officer Thalmann is one of the officers being remembered.

NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) – New Bern Aldermen approved $170,000 towards improvements to an athletic field that will be named after fallen New Bern Police Officer Alexander Thalmann.

Thalmann died in March 2014 after being shot a few days earlier in a suspect pursuit.

Mark Stephens said the money will go towards resodding the field and goal posts. Thalmann’s mother will donate a new scoreboard.

After the shooting happened, the board had asked if there was anything they could do to honor Thalmann. After several ideas were proposed, they decided on the athletic field.

Stephens said work will begin soon, and they are hoping to officially dedicate the field in April.
