Kinston hosts electric test drive event

KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) – It’s National Drive Electric Week, and Kinston gave residents an opportunity to test drive brand new electric cars.

Saturday residents drove new hybrid models of either a BMW Toyota or Chevrolet, during the electric test drive event.

It’s all in preparation for two new electric car charging stations coming to Kinston later this year.

Representatives from the dealerships say electric cars can save you money on gas and help the environment.

The Kinston Public Services Department said they are looking forward to the benefits for its residents.

“They can stop by and charge up here and eat downtown or visit the farmer’s market while they’re charging their cars. And it’s a free service that the city will be offering. And of course it all goes to the green initiative,” said Sheri Benson

The electric charging stations will be ready for public use by the end of the year.
