Teams compete in N.C. Senior Games basketball tournament in Pitt County

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Seniors from all 100 counties throughout the state traveled to Pitt County for a little 3-on-3 action Friday.

This is the 23rd annual North Carolina Senior Games 2016 State Finals basketball tournament. It’s being hosted today and tomorrow at the ECU Student Recreation Center.

Over 60 teams are competing including 10 teams from eastern North Carolina. All participants are 55 or older and compete for gold, silver and bronze medals.

Organizers say the tournament supports staying active and healthy competition.

“We can grow older and still have very filling, quality lives,” N.C. Senior Games Associate Director Lynn Harrell said. “We don’t have to sit down and do nothing once we reach a certain age.”senior-bball

For Tracy Hopkins, this is her first year playing however she has coached her mother’s team for several years. Hopkins says her mother is her inspiration.

“I see what it’s done for my mother,” said Hopkins who plays for the Rising Stars. “I see how she is 75 and solid as a rock and on the go all the time. To see her be able to be so healthy and move how she does.”

Play starts up again tomorrow at 8 a.m.  in the morning and wraps up at 5 p.m.

The winning teams receive the opportunity to compete at the National Senior Games in Birmingham, AL next summer.
