A popular and longstanding tradition returns to Emerald Isle as the beach driving season begins.
Individuals can buy permits to access the beach by heading over to Town Hall and filling out an application.
The town manager said it’s popular with fishermen, surfers, the elderly and handicapped individuals.
The town sells on average about 1,500 permits per year.
There are three locations along the island for drivers to enter the beach.
“We got ramps right around the corner of the building at the end of Black Skimmer Drive,” said Frank Rush, Emerald Isle town manager. “We have one on the east end of town in the 3000 block and then one at the point all the way down at Bogue Inlet.”
Beach driving season runs until April 30.
Residents can buy a permit for $50. Non-residents pay $100.
