Wayne Co. deputies make arrest in Fremont fire fighter impersonation scam

FREMONT, N.C., (WNCT) – A Kenly man was arrested Saturday after Wayne County deputies said he impersonated a Summerville Fire Department representative in the Fremont area in order to collect donations for smoke alarm inspections he never performed.

Billy Wayne Steen was arrested on a charge of obtaining property by false pretense after victims in the Fremont area filed a complaint regarding an individual wearing a Summerville Fire Department T-shirt.

The victims said they donated $10 to the individual on behalf of the Summerville Fire Department, and they filed the complaint after he never returned to complete the promised smoke alarm inspection.

According to the Summerville Fire Department, there was no individual representing their fire department conducting smoke alarm inspections or collecting monies on their behalf.

Steen is being held in lieu on $2,500 bail.
