Winterville Police: Dense fog may have caused fatal moped crash

WINTERVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Winterville Police said dense fog could have contributed to a fatal moped collision on Worthington Road in front of Cubbie’s restaurant Tuesday morning.

Investigators determined the moped was traveling east along Old Tar Road and rammed into the back of a stopped pickup truck waiting to turn left. No skids marks were found leading up to the collision, and officers do not suspect alcohol is related.

Winterville Fire and EMS rendered aid to David Roland, the 68-year-old moped driver from Ayden, N.C., who was eventually pronounced dead on the scene.

The driver of the pickup truck was not injured in the crash.
