Greenville leaders plan for next decade with Horizons 2026 in place

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Greenville city leaders now have a plan in place to develop the city over the next 10 years.

WNCT has reported about the Horizons 2026 plan, outlining the city’s goals for the next decade. After more than a year of work and public input, the blueprint for the city’s future is finally in place.

This plan is crucial, as Greenville continues to grow quickly. The latest numbers show the city’s population has surpassed 90,000 people and city leaders say they’re on track to break 100,000.

Horizons 2026 outlines how the city will develop with that increasing population. It includes everything from transportation to economic development to health and physical activity.

Mayor Allen Thomas says more than 5,000 citizens weighed in on the plan.

“The key thing that we heard from citizens was ‘get away from a one boulevard sprawl in growth.’ we need to create commercial nodes and residential nodes in various sections of the city. This is not a one avenue community by any stretch of the imagination anymore,” Mayor Thomas said.

Implementing Horizons 2026 starts now. Some of the priority actions include creating an incentive program for development, studying the Dickinson Avenue corridor, developing a green energy plan, and building a pedestrian bridge connecting north of the river to Uptown.

It outlines many goals including developing a vibrant uptown, safe streets, well-connected air travel, open and transparent government, abundant employment, sustainable and affordable housing, environmental conservation, and access to healthy foods and physical activity.

“A Southwest Bypass, what is that going to mean for this city? Will there be new growth out by the airport? We’re expecting expansive growth by the hospital, by the university area. This includes neighborhoods, businesses, and future road corridors. So we’re trying to anticipate and every decision we make over the next 10 years, we’ll always look at this plan as the roadmap as we grow Greenville,” Mayor Thomas said.

The plan is updated every 5 years. The last plan in place was Horizons 2010 and leaders say the city’s needs have changed dramatically since then.
