Two men drown north of Rodanthe Pier

RODANTHE, N.C. (WNCT)- Two men are dead after getting caught up in a rip current Friday afternoon.

Officials say a 70-year-old man was swimming near the Rodanthe Pier, when he got caught in a rip current.

People on the beach swan out to help, including a 51-year-old man.

Dare County EMS and Chicamacomico Surf Rescue arrived to the scene and recovered the 70-year-old and 51-year-old, and were unable to resuscitate them.

“The National Park Service is very sorry to learn about these fatalities and our hearts go out to the families and friends of the victims,” said Outer Banks Group Superintendent David Hallac.

There identities are not released as of Friday night.

There have been several swimming-related deaths in the Outer Banks this year.
