Plymouth man arrested in fatal Washington shooting

WASHINGTON, N.C. (WNCT) – A Plymouth man charged with murder will make his first appearance in Beaufort County court on Monday.Beaufort County deputies have arrested a man in connection with a fatal shooting in Washington.

24-year-old Jeffrey Lamar Sawyer was arrested on Friday, September 9th and charged with murder, first-degree burglary, and attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon.

They Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said 22-year-old Joshua Rashawn O’Neal was shot on Baker Drive in the River Road Estates Mobile Home Park off of River Road in Washington Thursday night. Deputies and North Carolina Highway Patrol troopers responded to the scene where they found O’Neal. They began lifesaving efforts until emergency medical personnel arrived, but O’Neal was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Sawyer remains at the Beaufort County Detention Center under no bond.

At this time, an investigation into O’Neal’s death is still underway. Investigators said more arrests in the case are likely.
