GPD captures Maryland fugitive after he ran from traffic stop

Greenville, NC (WNCT) – Greenville Police captured a fugitive wanted on first degree burglary charges out of Maryland.

Just before 4:00pm on Saturday, Greenville Police Sergeant K.Z. Thomas pulled William Williams over at a traffic stop at 14th Street and Charles Boulevard. GPD received a “Be on the Lookout” alert for Williams, and his license plate was flagged in the system.

Williams pulled over into a gas station, but left his vehicle and ran on foot behind the Swashbuckler Car Wash and Province Apartments.

GPD K9 Chesty located Williams in the woods, hiding in a small culvert in knee-deep water.

Williams is wanted on a warrant from Maryland for First Degree Burglary charges. He is currently in the Pitt County Detention Center and awaits extradition back to Maryland.

GPD said three other people were in Williams’ car at the time of the traffic stop. They did not attempt to run and were not charged.
