3 caught in rip current on Ocracoke yesterday

OCRACOKE, N.C. (WNCT) – Three people were rescued Monday after getting caught in a rip current near Ocracoke.

It happened around 1:30 p.m. at the end of Southpoint Road.

Hyde County Emergency Services said those involved included two underage children on boogie boards and their father. Fortunately, he was able to free the children from the rip current and they returned to shore. However, he was caught by the current. A lifeguard responded, rescuing the father.

None of them required medical treatment and they were onshore when an ambulance arrived.

No other incidents have since been reported.

Hyde County is coordinating with the NCDOT and Park Service to issue advisories about the high rip current risk.
