GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – It’s back to school for tens of thousands of kids across the east.
9 On Your Side stopped by Elmhurst Elementary in Greenville as kids were getting ready to take on a new year.
Starting this year, Elmhurst is focusing on global health and wellness.
Classrooms are equipped with exercise balls and pedals. All students will start learning Spanish and they’re focusing on how to stay healthy with water.
9 On Your Side received some mixed emotions talking to parents and students Monday morning. Fifth grader McKinsey Burt said she’s looking forward to her last year in elementary school, “I’m excited too that I can be the oldest and get privileges like leadership and orchestra and some other things that I haven’t gotten in my past years.”
More than 400 kids started school at Elmhurst Monday morning.
As kids and teachers head to their classrooms, Governor Pat McCrory is sending them a message.
“As you begin a new school year, I look forward to continuing to work with teachers, parents, administrators, and students to build upon our success,” said Governor Pat McCrory, R-NC. “Best wishes to everyone on a new school year and may God bless you and the great state of North Carolina.”
Also in McCrory’s back to school video address, he reflected on his time as a student in North Carolina and the changes he’s seen since he left the classroom.
