New early voting decision in Pitt County sparks concerns

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – The Pitt County Board of Elections’ decision to eliminate early voting on Sunday has citizens concerned.

The decision came after a 2 to 1 vote during this week’s board meeting.

They were not able to reach a unanimous decision and will send the plan off to the State Board of Elections for finalizations

Congressman G.K. Butterfield sent out a statement that said taking away early voting on Sunday is discriminatory. He plans to send a petition to the state in hopes of reconsideration.

“This is a very important election, probably one of the most important elections of our lifetime. And we must ensure that every citizen has a fair opportunity to participate in this election, even on Sundays,” Butterfield said.

The deadline for the state to receive early voting plans is next Wednesday.
