ECU faculty welcome new year at convocation

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Faculty at ECU are prepared to start the new year on Monday.

Friday, they gathered for faculty convocation in Wright Auditorium.

It was new Chancellor Cecil Staton’s first time addressing the faculty. He talked about ECU’s goals for the year, which include expanding research, getting more students to study abroad, increasing fundraising, and improving the university’s image nationally.

Provost Ron Mitchelson says focusing on the research component will bring the university closer with Vidant.

“I think we all see a great opportunity there to expand our research activity, especially in clinical trials to improve patient care,” Provost Mitchelson said.

This year, ECU is setting an enrollment record of nearly 29,000 students and is seeing growth in graduate students for the first time since 2008.

The new semester starts Monday.
