NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) – Law enforcement officers are investigating a suspected mobile meth lab following a Wednesday pick-up truck accident in Craven County.
Highway Patrol says around 7am on Wednesday, August 17, troopers responded to a single vehicle crash on NC 55 near Jasper Drive.
When troopers arrived, they found several plastic bottles with chemicals and vapors.
The Hazardous Materials Unit was dispatched and the Narcotics Unit with the Craven County Sheriff’s Office, Craven County EMS and the SBI were also notified.
Two Jasper volunteer firemen to include the Chief were exposed to the vapor when they picked up the bottles with the chemical precursors in them and put them in the pickup truck on the tailgate that crashed.
Two people were arrested and are now facing charges in the incident.
35-year-old Joseph Micah Joyce was driving the pick-up truck and his passenger was 31-year-old Kellie Rae Guy.
Joyce is on active probation/parole and was released from prison last month.
Guy is on Craven County probation and had a parole office ankle bracelet on.
Both were taken to Carolina East Medical Center for the injuries from the crash.
Joyce is charged with Driving While License Revoked & Reckless Driving and is expected to face other drug related charges with the Craven County Sheriff’s Office.
