Gravestones damaged when car careens into national cemetery

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) — Authorities say a wall was damaged and about a half dozen headstones destroyed when a car careened into the Wilmington National Cemetery in North Carolina.

Linda Rawley of the Wilmington police tells local news outlets the crash happened shortly before midnight on Tuesday. Police later charged 23-year Tirron Omar Bright with hit and run and impaired driving. It was not immediately known if he had an attorney.

Officials say the damaged headstones should be replaced within the next few weeks.

The 5-acre cemetery was established in 1867 for veterans of the Civil War. More than 6,200 veterans and their spouses are interred there.
