FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — In appears minor league baseball is coming to Fayetteville.

Local media outlets report that Fayetteville City Council on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding with the Houston Astros to bring a Class A team to the city.

Under the plan, the new team could be playing as early as next season, although the memorandum calls for the city to have a new stadium ready for the 2019 season. The city has capped the cost of a new stadium at $33 million.

While the memorandum is not binding, the city hopes to have all the necessary contracts signed, the stadium designed and a financing plan in place later this year.

The Astros would have a 30-year lease on the stadium from the time it is first occupied.
