RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCT) – The attorney for a man convicted of killing and dismembering his ex-girlfriend and mother of his two sons is asking for a new trial.
On Tuesday, Grant Hayes’ attorney filed the motion claiming Hayes rights were violated by the state during the interception of his legal mail. The motion also claims the prosecution used unreliable witnesses and Hayes was denied effective counsel at trial.
Laura Ackerson’s body was found a Texas creek in 2011. Ackerson was the mother of two children.
Hayes appealed for a new trial last year but it was denied.
