Jacksonville veteran given gift of sound free of charge

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – A veteran can hear again for the first time in years.

It’s all thanks to a local company giving back to servicemen and women.

Retired Sergeant Major Edward Mayfield suffered from hearing loss after deployments to Japan and Vietnam.

Wednesday in Jacksonville, Mayfield received his new $7,500 dollar aids free of charge from Beltone Hearing Care Foundation.

“It’s going to be a lot better instead of having to say huh or miss something,” said Sgt. Major Edward Mayfield, retired. “Especially for my wife, it’s going to be a great thing because I don’t hear half the things she says anyway. Probably don’t want to. Naw, I’m just kidding.”

Mayfield’s device connects to his phone, allowing him to hear conversations directly through his hearing aid.
