UPDATE: Hwy 24 reopens in Duplin County after tanker flips

KENANSVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Highway Patrol is still investigating a tanker accident in Duplin County.

Trooper Cheastain tells 9 On Your Side, it happened around 11:22 a.m.on U.S. Hwy 24. A tanker for Thomas and Horne Oil Company ran off the road and overcorrected. The tanker driven by Brent Penny was carrying about 1500 gallons of diesel and 500 gallons of gasoline.

It is estimated that about 500 gallons spilled on the roadway. Hazmat crews were on scene most of Wednesday working to clean the scene.

The roads were reopened later Wednesday evening to traffic.

Penny was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center with nonlife-threatening injuries.

The accident is still under investigation.
