GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – 9 On Your Side has an update to a story reported in July.
Academy Sports is coming to Greenville right beside Hobby Lobby.
From fishing equipment to active wear, it will have everything you need to enjoy the outdoors.
Crews said they’ve been working around the clock finishing the outside walls and wiring electricity.
The expected completion date is between November and December.
Original Story 7/7/2016:
Greenville continues to grow, which adds jobs and traffic into the city.
Just in the last several months, we’ve seen big businesses like Hobby Lobby and Red Robin come to town. Greenville city leaders said the city isn’t finished yet.
Even though the piece of land beside Hobby Lobby looks empty now, you’ll be able to shop at Academy Sports soon.
Vanessa Allen, Greenville resident, moved to Pitt County back in 1984 and said she never in a million years thought Greenville would grow to this size.
“More houses, more apartments, just places unknown that I’ve seen come up,” she said.
The city continues to see more development and people coming to the area. Just in the last few months, Greenville surpassed 90,000 people living in the city limits.
“A lot of this was not here. We’ve got more eating places to choose from. Not only eating places, but we need other businesses as well,” Allen added.
A building off Evans Street will soon house another eatery called Totopos, which will serve street food and tequila. It’s near the Best Buy and Ross.
On Dickinson Avenue, Domino’s and the Salvation Army mission station are set for demolition to make way for new development. There are plans for a possible shopping plaza in the area.
“It will give current residents and people who are in our town on a daily basis more options, which is always a good thing,” said Mike Dail, the lead planner for the project. He said more business coming to the area means more people wanting to come and live in Greenville.
Allen hopes in the next few years, there is something for everyone.
“More shopping in Greenville. My main focus right now is another fabric store to come back in Greenville,” said Dail.
9 On Your Side was told the new restaurant on Evans Street will open in the next few months and Academy Sports will open behind in the next year or so.
