Coupon Crusade: Digital savings put cash & other freebies right back in your wallet

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – WNCT 9 On Your Side taking care of you. This month, just in time for back to school shopping, we’re helping you and your family save money!

9 On Your Side has already looked at couponing, and now, WNCT’s Angela Green wants to show you how your cell phone, certain apps, and even some stores are working to help put cash and other freebies right back in your wallet.

In the age of technology, you no longer have to carry around a key chain full of loyalty and reward cards, all thanks to free mobile apps.

But a simple poll of our newsroom employees show some people just can’t part ways with them. Many of the key tags we found are worn and they’re rarely ever used.

It’s an issue that the folks at Food Lion see at their registers all the time.

Store manager Amber Newell said their MVP rewards program is a huge success. But still many shoppers forget to use them.

Their cashiers keep the cards on hand and offer to swipe them, even if they don’t want to sign up.

“We do whatever it takes to make them happy,” said Amber Newell. “Really, a couponer or a non-couponer, you still want them to save whatever they can save.”

She said the rewards stretch beyond scanning the cards at the register. They offer an in-store kiosk to print off coupons. And if you go to their website, you can load up on even more savings.

“It saves you some time and energy really, because if you go online at foodlion.com we have a coupon hub that will load straight to your MVP card,” she added.

The store’s MVP card also links promotions based on your shopping history. A simple check of WNCT Angela Green’s MVP rewards card netted free bananas and, of course, my son’s favorites, buy one, get one free Lunchables.

Our expert couponer Monique Warren said there are also benefits of keeping your receipts after you’ve racked up at the store, “I keep a bucket because there are so many different phone apps that you can receive money back for your receipts.”

Most of the apps are free. And simple to use, offering rebates on your everyday purchases. And they’re super easy to use.

Below, you’ll find some links to many of these apps to help you and your family save money.
