EUGENE, Ore. (ECU Media Relations) – East Carolina high jumper Avion Jones, who recently exhausted his collegiate eligibility, will compete in his first professional meet when he takes part in the Tracktown Summer Series.
The TrackTown Summer Series (TTSS) championship event will be held Friday, July 29 at 9:30 p.m. at Hayward Field. The high jump event is scheduled to begin at 10:30.
The meet, which will be televised live by ESPN, is designed to provide top American track and field athletes with a unique opportunity to compete on American soil during the summer months.
The TTSS features four teams representing the cities of Portland, San Francisco, Philadelphia and New York City. Each squad will carry 36 athletes on its roster, split evenly between men and women, with competitors battling for prize money and additional benefits in excess of a half-million dollars. The events will be scored 9-7-6-5-4-3-2-1. Jones was drafted in the sixth round by Team San Francisco.
In each of the 20 scheduled men’s and women’s events, prize money will be awarded to the top six finishers as follows:
1st place = $4,000
2nd place = $3,000
3rd place = $2,000
4th place = $1,000
5th place = $750
6th place = $500
Jones ended his East Carolina career with four All-America selections, six conference titles (four in the American Athletic Conference) and an appearance in the finals of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials.
