SWAN QUARTER, NC (WNCT) — A Hyde County Correctional Officer faces charges after the Sheriff’s Office says he supplied drugs to an inmate. Joshua Carawan was arrested and charged with furnishing tobacco and a controlled substance of to an inmate.
Investigators say inmate Adrian Cofield was found in possession of marijuana, a cell phone, tobacco and a knife. Cofield has been charged with possession of electronic communication device, possession of a dangerous weapon, possession of a controlled substance and possession of tobacco while in custody of North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections.
The Sheriff’s Office says the investigation is ongoing and more people could be charged in connection to this incident. Cofield is currently in prison serving time for possession with the intent to sell and selling of controlled substances. The North Carolina Department of Public Safety lists Cofield as a habitual felon with repeat offenses.
Carawan resigned from his position on Tuesday. Department of Public Safety says there will not be an internal investigation since Carawan no longer works for the department. Carawan worked for the last eight and a half years in Hyde and Craven counties.
