Fatal car accident leaves woman dead not far from home

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – The Onslow County driver blamed for an unusual fatal accident is still recovering at Vidant Medical Center.

The hospital says 85-year-old Leon Sylvester Jr. is in fair condition.

Troopers say his SUV went airborne Wednesday after going off US 258 in Richlands. It crashed into a stopped car, killing the woman inside.

Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident in Onslow County.

Trooper JD Kirk tells 9 On Your Side, it happened around 12:30p.m. on U.S. 258 at the intersection of McGowen Road.

85-year-old Leon Sylvester Jr was traveling South on U.S. 258 when he went off the road and into a ditch. After hitting the ditch, Sylvester’s SUV went airborne and crashed on top of 73-year-old Mattie Andrew’s car on the driver’s side.

Andrews was waiting at a stop sign at McGowen Road. After crashing on top of the car Sylvester’s SUV overturned and landed on the shoulder.

Andrews was pronounced dead at the scene. She lived right down the road where the accident happened.

Sylvester is currently at Vidant Medical Center after being airlifted. Troopers say his injuries are non-life threatening.

Troopers are still working to figure out why Sylvester went off the road. No speed or alcohol contributed to the accident.

Charges are pending further investigation.
