Police investigating Kinston woman’s shooting

KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) – Police are investigating an overnight shooting.

The Kinston Police Department said in a news release Tuesday that it happened around 1:27 a.m.

Officers arriving at the scene of a reported shots fired call found Tanita Vanek Simpler on South Orion St. (Simon Bright Apartment Complex) suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He told officers that two unknown, black male suspects entered through the back door of her apartment and shot her. Simpler was taken to Vidant Medical Center for treatment. Neighbors said she’s still in the hospital but doing alright.

Two other people, a 37-year-old and a juvenile, inside the residence at the time of the shooting were unharmed.
