Onslow Co. Sheriff: Major demoted after racially charged Facebook post

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Onslow County Sheriff Hans Miller said he demoted Major Robert Ides after Ides made a racially charged message on his personal Facebook page.

It was linked to story about a Black Lives Matter protest. Because of the nature, 9 On Your Side will not share the post.

Sheriff Miller said after 18 years with the office, Ides will become a deputy.

Ides was part of the patrol division. He’s out on personal leave and when he returns this week he will face disciplinary actions.

The sheriff said Ides told him he regrets making the comment. Miller said the comment was hurtful and not in line with his office.
