New way to transmit Zika emerges in the country

NEW YORK, N.Y. (WNCT) – Health experts in New York City are looking into one unique Zika case, after a man contracted the virus from a woman.

The virus is normally transmitted by mosquitoes, but has also been transmitted from males to females during sex. For the first time, a woman has infected a male with the virus.

“They had sexual intercourse just before she began to develop symptoms and we know that this is a time when people infected with Zika are reaching the highest levels of virus in their blood,” said Dr. John Brooks with the CDC.

The majority of people infected with Zika don’t show any symptoms.
