Town of Emerald Isle restricts hours for shark chumming

EMERALD ISLE, N.C. (WNCT) – In Emerald Isle, shark chumming activities are now restricted to night hours only.

Permitted hours are 8 p.m. – 8 a.m. only. Shark chumming is now prohibited from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.

According to the town’s Facebook page, the new rule is in response to recent shark incidents in Carteret County and takes into consideration the large number of visitors to Emerald Isle’s beach strand each day.

This restriction is effective immediately, and will continue through September 15. The restriction applies to the Town’s entire beach strand along the Atlantic Ocean and Bogue Inlet.

Any shark “chumming” activities between 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. are now illegal, and the Emerald Isle Police Department will be enforcing this restriction. Violators will be required to immediately cease shark chumming activities and may be subject to a fine.

This temporary restriction applies to shark chumming only. No other fishing activities are restricted in Emerald Isle.
