NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) – Police have arrested a New Bern man after a complaint from the Canadian Homeland Security Law Enforcement Division that he was soliciting sex from a thirteen-year-old over the internet.
29-year-old Richard Michael Haas was charged with one felony count of Solicit a Child by Computer and one felony count of Indecent Liberties With a Child. He was jailed on a $50,000 secure bond.
Police say they first heard from Canadian authorities on June 27 and immediately launched an extensive investigation, which culminated with a search warrant of the suspect’s home located on Brandy Wine Drive. With the assistance of Craven County Sheriff’s Office deputies, they searched and seized computers and a cell phone.
Haas was scheduled for a first appearance Thursday.
