GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – In Thursday’s consumer alert, the Better Business Bureau of Eastern NC has a warning for social media users.
It’s urging Instagram users to avoid the ugly list scam.
After receiving an Instagram notification saying a friend tagged you in the ugly list, there’s a link to see the full post.
By clicking on it, you’re then led to a page that appears to be the Instagram log in.
Then, when you log on you have now given the scammer your user name and password and they will then hack your account, tag your followers in new ugly list posts and continue the hack on through your friends lists.
Zeke Sigler, a student at ECU, says he’s heard of the scam and urges folks to be smart about their social media presence.
“I think just going forward don’t click any links that come about from any sort of social media that you’re not aware of or something that just looks a little fishy to you.”
To avoid being scammed, the BBB of Eastern NC recommends doing a quick search before clicking on any unknown links and ask you to report any Instagram scams if you feel you’ve been hacked.
