How seniors in the East are braving the extreme heat

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – With a heat index value of 102, a watchful eye on elderly loved ones is necessary.

Council on Aging employees say, if able, to stay indoors in an air-conditioned building, or near fans, to keep cool. Plus, don’t forget to stay hydrated, even if you aren’t thirsty.

One senior citizen has a warning for everyone.

“It’s always good to be inside in cool weather no matter what age you are. It’s not so good for you out in that heat,” said Mike Kraczon, a senior citizen.

Also, make sure to check on the elderly frequently. Heat is the no. 1 weather-related killer. 40-percent of heat-related fatalities in the United States are of people over the age of 65.
