NC police sergeant and teen girl hit by lightning at Topsail Beach

TOPSAIL BEACH, N.C. (WNCT) – A teenager and police officer were struck by lightning on Topsail Beach Sunday evening.

It happened around 5 p.m. near Serenity Point.

Topsail Beach Police Chief Samuel Gervase said emergency crews were called to the beach after a 14-year-old girl was struck by lightning.

Gervase said Sergeant Zach Cooke and another officer helped get the girl to EMS. He said after assisting the teen, Cooke was also hit by lightning while checking the area.

The teen was taken to a local hospital and later airlifted to the Jaycee Burn Center at The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.

CNN affiliate WECT said the girl suffered burns to her ears.

Chief Gervase said Sgt. Cooke was treated and released from the hospital.
