ECU nursing students back from annual Guatemala service trip

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – A three-week escape to Latin America recently wrapped up.

A group of East Carolina University students are back in the states after their trip to Guatemala. Every year, more than a dozen nursing students participate in a study abroad experience.

The goal is to immerse the future providers into a different culture.

During their trip, the students taught well-being classes. They also taught people how to access clean water and have donated a number of materials.

“The villages ask us to come in and teach their children about dental care, oral hygiene, hand washing, which is so important to infection control and nutrition,” said Kim Larson, with ECU nursing.

Larson also said it costs the students just over $2,000 to participate.
