Low-income students offered free program at The Oakwood School

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – A new summer learning program launched Monday morning in Pitt County.

The Oakwood School is the first affiliated site of Horizons in North Carolina.

Low-income students from Pitt County public schools will have the opportunity to attend a tuition-free 6-week summer program on Oakwood’s campus.

In small classes led by professional teachers, students dive into a rich curriculum with a focus on reading, STEM, and art. Swimming and other confidence-boosting activities break down barriers to success and expose children to new opportunities.

“Our community in general, the Lake Forest and Falkland community that we partnered with, has a lot of these students that simply don’t have the resources, and that’s what we want to provide them with,” said executive director for Horizons at the Oakwood School, Kris Arnold. “We know that all of them have the capability of succeeding, and we want to prove that year end and year out.”

According to Arnold, Horizons transforms the way students see themselves and helps their reading and math skills improve significantly.

Children join Horizons the summer after Kindergarten and return to the program each year through 8th grade, building lasting relationships with their teachers and peers and developing life skills essential for success.

The program at Oakwood began with 15 kindergarten students and will add a new kindergarten class each year.

Horizons was founded in New Canaan, Connecticut 51 years ago and has since grown to over 50 programs at affiliate independent schools and colleges now in 17 states.
