Sex offender charged after recorded sex act with teen found on cell phone

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – A registered sex offender is charged after investigators found a sex act between him and a teen girl stored on his cell phone.

35-year-old Robert Nathaniel Winstead of Winterville is charged with statutory rape or sex offense.

His arrest and subsequent charges are result of a report by the teen’s mother on Monday that her 16-year-old daughter had been sexually assaulted by Winstead. Investigators say that the pair had had been involved in a consensual relationship since November 2015. However, the girl told them that the two of them participated in a sexual act when she was just 14.

Further investigation showed the incident allegedly happened at an apartment in Greenville and a video of it was stored on his cell phone. Deputies executed a search warrant Thursday, collecting that cell phone and other pieces of electronic equipment. Winstead was arrested later in the day.

He was placed in the Pitt County Detention Center under a $500,000 secured bond.
