JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Deputies arrested a Jacksonville man, who’s accused of the murder of his girlfriend, and a female neighbor, who’s been arrested as an accessory.
The Jacksonville Police Department said Friday in a news release that when EMS responded to Riggs Street in Jacksonville for an unresponsive female on the morning of March 30, they found her unconscious and the apparent victim of a violent assault. She had obvious signs of assault on her body. EMS then made contact with a neighbor of the female, who reported that the victim had been assaulted at a nightclub the night before. The victim was taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, but later died on April 2.
Investigators determined that the victim hadn’t been to a bar or a nightclub. They also found that she hadn’t been engaged in an assault from an unknown subject, as previously stated by the neighbor. They also discovered that the victim lived with the suspect, who already had a history of violent domestic assaults against her. Investigators say the female neighbor aided the suspect, who fled the state before detectives could locate him.
45-year-old George Merwin Shafto of Jacksonville was arrested Thursday by deputies with the Cumberland County Tennessee Sheriff’s Office on one Open Count of Murder. He’s currently awaiting extradition back to Onslow County.
48-year-old Wendy Sue McFarlan of Jacksonville was also arrested Thursday and charged with Accessory After the Fact. She was placed in the Onslow County Jail under a $150,000 secured bond.
