Arts and culture on the rise in Uptown Greenville

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Greenville’s economy continues growing, and so does its arts and cultural scene.

Residents may have noticed lots of events happening in Uptown recently.

Organizers at Uptown Greenville actively seek out participants, yet now, Director Bianca Shoneman says the tides have turned.

“We’re actually seeing a lot of the community wanting to do these events on their own, which I think is very exciting,” Shoneman said.

It’s also driving the city’s economy.

“We see an uptick in patrons at the local businesses. It puts feet on the streets right. It shows off a great built environment, it brings people together, it creates community,” Shoneman said.

This weekend is a perfect example of Greenville’s growth. Friday night, the annual Greenville Grooves Music Festival kicks off in Five Points Plaza at 5:30. Saturday, the Carolina BBQ Festival heads to Town Common from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday in the Park, now partnering with the Umbrella Market, caps off the weekend with the Emerald City Big Band at 7 p.m.
